Elisa Doucette Portrait Session: Using Professional Photos for Your Website

Elisa Doucette is a writer, editor, and entrepreneur. As the owner of the editorial and content management agency Craft Your Content, she has written for a variety of businesses and publications, and has worked for over a decade creating and editing captivating content.

She asked me to take professional photos for article bios, social media, marketing materials and her website.

Such headshots can be used cropped and resized for different online network profiles, or kept as is.

They can also be edited and formatted into icons, banners, and call-to-action images for websites and emails.

When most people think of a “professional photo,” they usually visualize very standard headshots. I prefer to get to know each client and find a way to portray them so that when clients click on their bio, they get a sense of who this person is.

To this end, I try to capture both the subject’s personality and the type of business he or she is in.

Elisa wanted to feature several things, like a dress she brought back from her time in Bali, and something bright and outdoorsy to reflect her work as a freelance writer and editor in the midst of a five-year world travel stint.

She also wanted to show her professional focus on writing and editing by taking a few shots in the grass with a journal. I love this photo of her!

It’s also important to have photos that showcase your personality, even in a professional business like Elisa’s. In this case, taking a shot of her signature funny face was a great way to add dimension to her portfolio.

“I get more positive feedback on that single photo than any other picture I use in my business. People love that I can market and deliver such professional services, but still have a fun personality. This picture further helps me share that side of myself,” explains Elisa.

It’s also important to take photos with lots of space and character.

You can take a photo like this…

Or, remember Elisa’s writing picture from above?

She was able to crop it and add some simple text to create a small squared sidebar opt-in for readers and clients to email her agency any questions they have on the writing and editorial process:
