Senior Portrait Photography : Portland, Maine

I had the opportunity to photograph a fantastic young lady, Lindsay who is a senior at Marshwood for her yearbook picture.  When she contacted me, she said, “In doing this session, I want to remember the fun times I had in high school and look forward to the new experiences in life.”

Together, we designed a session that suited who she is and also had a little fun choosing locations that were different.  She wanted different that was one keyword that kept coming up during our conversation.  She didn’t want what she had been seeing.  So, we worked together to create a collection of photographs that would be memorable to look back on.  At first, Lindsay was looking for a location that was more edgy, she mentioned the Old Port and graffiti.  I balanced out the session by starting in the studio so she’d have a variety.  She wound up choosing an in studio shot for her yearbook picture which surprised me because she was so into the idea of graffiti.

Here is the photograph she chose for her senior yearbook picture.

I’m so glad she chose a softer portrait.  Something a little more timeless.

When we were scheduling her session, she had asked if she could bring her dog.  The answer to this question is and will always be YES.  I know in the future she will really cherish these photos of her and her pup.

I LOVED this session.  I had SO much fun!  I have to thank Mr. Richard Barnes for suggesting I try senior portraiture.  He is a mentor, photographer and instructor at Hallmark Institute of Photography.  He had suggested I try environmental senior portraits after seeing some of my recent work.  I was hesitant as I felt there was this high level of cheese happening in the senior portrait world.  He assured me that my style can easily be translated into this avenue of photography.  I’m very thankful for his advice.  The seniors I worked with in 2011 inspired me and were wonderful experiences.  Lindsay wrote me an email after her session which impressed me that she’d reach out:

“Hi Melissa,  I just want to thank you again for doing my senior portraits.  I had a LOT of fun doing them and I found it to be a great high school experience that I know I’ll remember.  I can’t wait to see the outcome!”

I feel capturing teens at this stage is so important and really rewarding work. I like to design the session by working with the parents needs and also hearing what the teen wants.  I feel this is a perfect example of what I can do for senior portraits. Thank you Lindsay, your awesome Mom and your adorable pup for giving me the honor of creating these memories for you!
