I recently came across an article via Levo.com titled “Are Corporate Headshots the New Handshake?” The author, Kristen Murray,  goes on to explain how first impressions have always mattered, and in the past it was all about the handshake. Now that we’ve entered the era of LinkedIn, virtual business, and online personal branding, a well-done headshot can be equally important as a firm grip.

I completely agree. Not only are businesses and employees conversing on LinkedIn, but Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well. Having a visual for yourself and your brand is extremely important in this day and age.

Ms. Murray goes on to explain the importance of a carefully chosen headshot to the set the tone and to best represent yourself and/or your brand. Furthermore, she states that “polished, genuine, and more relaxed headshots” are in. Au revoir Glamour Shots!

I had the opportunity to photograph the brokers and staff of  NAI The Dunham Group for their business portrait head shots. The Dunham Group is a commercial real estate brokerage company located in Portland, Maine. For over 40 years, The Dunham Group has provided in-depth, commercial real estate knowledge, market specialization, and proven representation to our loyal client base. The company recently updated their website to include the business portraits and it looks fantastic.

I have been fortunate to photograph many clients for their business portraits and head shots ranging from realtors and freelance writers to multimedia storytellers and masseuses. You can see a sampling of my past work here.

Ms. Murray went on to give tips for the perfect head shots. Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Show some personality and SMILE!
  2. No matter how pretty you look, skip any headshot that has other people’s body parts cropped out around your head.
  3. Don’t wear anything with words, and stick to solids or subtle patterns. Words and flashy patterns distract viewers from your beautiful profile!
  4. Skip the suit and wear something that shows off your (work) style. Anything with a classic neckline should do the trick.
  5. Update regularly—once a year is a good rule of thumb. A career change or branding adjustment may also mean an update is in order.
